Actual Cruising Costs

So what does it cost to leave everything and take to the seas while feeding three growing children and keeping a 47 foot, 24 year old catamaran at baseline?

We have made several boat improvements (cushions, hard top, sun covers, engines), but the vast majority of boat costs are just to keep things working as they should.  We avoid eating out, rarely buy treats, purchase water only when it can't be caught from the sky or acquired on the sly, have spent a total of 15 days in marinas out of 1,600+ and, in general, pinch pennies until our fingers bleed.  The money still seems to evaporate.

Our daily cost, averaged over four years aboard, is $142.95 per day.

For 2011, our first full year, our daily average was $148.33.  In 2012, with several larger boat projects complete and a closer eye on expenses our daily average was $98.70.  In 2013, we tightened our belts for most of the year, but then completed a few large boat projects late in the year so averaged $133.71.  In 2014, with client projects and work load picking up, we took on even more major boat projects, including replacing both our engines so our total daily increased to $191.19.
