Fishy Boat Names

When cruising the Bahamas in the Spring of 2012, we soon realized, just by listening to the VHF radio for a time, that Abaco is translated as 'fishing' for some.  Their Sailfish tournaments cost 5 boat bucks to enter and the proceeds are split between the first three winners.  Their method of determining a winner has been said to consist of taking a photo of your trophy catch, estimating the length and weight, throwing it back and turning the photo in to the judges.  These fishermen's boat names reflect their passion:

  1. Full Moon
  2. Ocean Blue
  3. Sea Spray
  4. Kritta Killa
  5. Reel Drag
  6. Hang Ten
  7. Down Deep
  8. Karma
  9. Striker
  10. Back Breaker
  11. A Salt Weapon
  12. A Reel Dive
  13. Hypertension
  14. Reel Magic
  15. Tackle Box
  16. Night Hawk

Once we ended up in the US, we saw that the fishing boat nomenclature continues as well as finding a few in the Caribbean Islands. Some of the more fishy sounding are as follows:

  1. Finders Keepers, Charleston, SC
  2. Getting Away, Charleston, SC
  3. Drag Queen, Charleston, SC
  4. Reel Tight, Cape Fear, NC
  5. Bottom Line, Beaufort, NC
  6. Tad Pole, Beaufort, NC
  7. Tackle Box, Beaufort, NC
  8. Goin' Deep, Lewes, DE
  9. Hot Rod, Lewes, DE
  10. Reel Candy, over the VHF on the way to Maine
  11. Surreel, Middletown, RI
  12. Knock 'Em Down Guide Service, East Hampton, NY (not a boat name, but worthy of mention nevertheless)
  13. Bulldozer, Sint Maarten (male mahi-mahis are called 'bulls')
  14. Mega Bite, Saint Martin
  15. Alaskan Assassin, Juneau, AK
  16. Reel Tales, Sint Maarten
  17. Mega Byte, San Juan, Puerto Rico
