We've been hanging out with more Aussies than Americans lately and have had to adjust a little to figure out what they are saying.   So, a dictionary was in order.   The girls, of course, picked it up quickly.   Lisa and I, at times, were scratching our heads.

  • Bin ~ Trash can
  • Blockout ~ Sunscreen
  • Bommies ~ Coral heads
  • Breakie or Brekkie ~ Breakfast
  • Bubble-lish ~ Term of endearment as in "Honey" or "Sweetie"
  • Chippies ~ French fries
  • Chook ~ Live chicken
  • Cozzie ~ Swim Costume (Swimsuit)
  • Crook ~ Sick
  • Dag ~ Affectionate term for fool or idiot
  • Dead horse ~ Ketchup
  • Dob ~ Tattle-tale
  • Dummie ~ Pacifier
  • Dunny ~ Toilet
  • Fluffy ~ Flatulence
  • Greeblies ~ Things in the water that can get you
  • Grey Nomads ~ Snowbirds
  • Grot ~ Slob
  • Hoons ~ Hooligan, rev-heads
  • Icy Stick ~ Popsicle  
  • Jello ~ Jelly
  • Jelly ~ Jello
  • Jag ~ accidentally or amazingly caught something (e.g. jag a first class seat on a plane flight, jag a fish by its tail)
  • Lifie ~ Life Jacket
  • Lobbie ~ Lobster
  • Lollie ~ candy, lollipop
  • Loo ~ Bathroom
  • Love Heart ~ A heart shape drawing or cutout, like for Valentines
  • Milkbar ~ corner mom and pop shop
  • Mozzie ~ Mosquito
  • Nappie ~ Diaper
  • No Worries ~ That's fine, no problem
  • Pickies ~ Pictures
  • POME (pron. 'pommy') ~ Prisoner of Mother England
  • Rainie ~ Rain jacket
  • Rubber ~ Eraser
  • Rubbish ~ Trash
  • Runnies ~ Tennis Shoes
  • Sambo ~ Sandwich
  • Secateurs ~ Small gardening shears
  • See-Saw ~ Teeter-Totter
  • Spindy ~ Hitchhiker, a prickly barbed seed pod found on tropical beaches that sticks in your foot or finger
  • Stuffed ~ "I can't be stuffed!" means "I can't be bothered."
  • Sunnies ~ Sunglasses
  • Swimmers ~ Swimsuit
  • Tickle ~ Scratch. "Can you tickle my back?"
  • Thongs ~ Flip-flops
  • Tucker ~ Good food, after being eaten.  "That's some good tucker mate"
  • Tog ~ Swimsuit or bathers
  • Torch ~ Flashlight
  • Tomato Sauce ~ See deadhorse, ketchup
  • Wee ~ Bathroom visit, light duty
  • Whipper-Snipper ~ Weed-whacker/weed-eater
  • Wingeing ~ Whining, complaining, as in "those Wingeing POME's"  (whining English)
